What is the meaning in the Star spangled banner song? THe 1st line~ oh can you see, by the dawn's early light

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:

'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I need to the store behind this song

Thank you very much

Francis Scott Key awakens in the morning, expecting to see the fort (Fort McHenry in Massachusetts), completely blown to smithereens. In the dawning light, he makes out the flag of his nation. It was torn, yet still flying high and strong. He envisioned it as being the mark of a proud nation. It's beautiful symbolism for the war that was raging.
Reply:It was written after a war, some guy who was there wrote about it. It means we won the war. I cant remember what war though I learned all this in 5th grade adn hell if I can remember it all.
Reply:it tells the story of what Francis scoot key saw from a British ship

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,- can you see from the light of the morning

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?- over the fight (the wasr of 1912) the flag is still seen with the bombs being the source of light over the night
Reply:it means that the guy who's in captivity wakes up in the morning and see the sun shinging on the american flag that is still standing
