What is the meaning of the spiritual, 'Sending Up My Timber'?
There's a dream That I dreamed
Of my Heavenly Heavenly home
And I know that That I'm going There one day
And oh Lord It maybe morning Night or noon
I don't know Just how soon,
That's why I'm sending On up my timber
Every, every, every day
Oh, yes I Said I'm sending Up my timber
On up to glory Every day
Oh there's a mansion Somewhere in glory
That the Lord has Prepared for you and me
And oh, oh, may be morning Night or noon Yes,
I don't know children Just how soon
That's why I'm sending... Yeah Sending
up a little timber children every, everyday
Can any Christians explain this?
The Bible says we are to store up our treasures in Heaven where fire or moths or thieves can't get them. Those are the only treasures that will last. Everything we gain here is counted as loss for Christ if we do not put him first.
I'd venture to guess this may have originated as a black or Appalachian spiritual tune. It is an allusion to sending ahead that which gets you there in the first place.
Reply:i think it means that i'm going to do good things and please the lord. the timber represents the good deeds that christians do. God uses the "timber"to build your heavenly mansion. and it's a mansion if you truly give yourself to God. by giving yourself to God and doing his works, you essentially are investing in your heavenly home.
Reply:Never heard of this - but the meaning I take from it is this. Jesus said, "In my Father’s house are many mansions" indicating that there are different levels of glory - Paul also referred to this in 1 Cor. 15.
Anyway, as we are to be saved by grace, after all we can do, perhaps "sending On up my timber" is a metaphor for the good works that are evidenced by faith - metaphorically building one of those 'many mansions.'
Reply:I have never heard this song before, but by reading the lyrics it would go along with the verse in the Bible where Jesus said: "But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Matthew 6:20-21
Reply:It's symbolic and it does not refer to the cross, it refers to making sacrifices in this life and believing we will have treasures in heaven.
Reply:It seems to be saying, "I'm sending up my timber" so that the Lord will have something to build the mansion with. Kinda weird if you ask me.
Reply:I'm not sure but I believe the song is referring to the "Cross"
