At my old house (we moved this year) I always grew blue morning glories on an arbor made of lattice. (I think arbor and lattice are the right words) Anyways...my old house will look beautiful this year...are new house has not a plant in the back yard. We do have a 6 foot privacy fence and I wanted to know if morning glories and moon flowers will climb that well? There aren't the open squares for it to lace through...but will that matter? Will it still cling to the wood? The big fence post I know it will climb? Any experience with that or do you think it would look weird. I just need more green in my back yard and we don't have a lot of money to spend this year. Thanks in advance for all your help. Oh and there should be no problem panting the morning glories and moon flowers together right. So we have blooms in the am and pm....should I plant one on one side of the post and one on the other. I know....dumb Q's for such an easy plant...I'm kind of a beginner gardener. I try
Question about morning glories and moonflowers??
I have moon flowers and I tried to train them up some posts. they seem to get pretty rangy. I put english ivy with mine to cover the bare spots. I would use small fence staples to fasten the stems to. You won't even notice the staples.
You have a great idea to plant Morning Glory with them and would put them on the same side and they will probably look absolutely great. By the way, save those moon flower seeds and make more!
Reply:why not use chicken wire or fishing line some small nails on the fence and let them train up that ,and you wont see it at all .
Reply:unfortunately both these ( and many other vines) climb by winding around something, so will not grow directly on the fence. However you can get special gardening lattice ( I have seen it everywhere including walmart) - it is sold in a roll- that you can staple onto the fence and it comes in green or black and is perfect. I have had clematis climbing happily on it.
Another alternative would be to get some chicken coop or fence wire that you can do the same with.
The only vine I can think of offhand that clings and would grow there is ivy. But it won't flower for you although it's leaves tend to turn to a good red in the fall.
