will morning glories climb chicken wire straight up or do i need to roll the wire? i'd like to cover the back part of my deck which gets full sun and i'd like to do it inexpensively for the season. there is a lot of dead space because the deck was built on a hill. i figured i would pin up some chicken wire and grow morning glories. its full sun.
Morning glories?
Morning glories will work but personally, they are more ugly leaves than they are pretty blooms.
I have an ugly chain link fence of my back yard neighbor's that I like to cover every year so I know what you're dealing with.
Any kind of vining plant will grow on your chicken wire but the problem will be the weight of the plant pulling down your chicken wire unless it is well supported at the ends and in the middle. Even then it will sag in places.
Better than chicken wire would be a section or two of wood lattice (about the same price as your chicken wire and certainly will look nicer and be stronger.)
Regardless of what you end up using, nicer and prettier plants to grow would be hyacinth bean vine (beautiful heart shaped leaves and pretty clusters of dark, hot- pinkish blooms and grows real fast.
I have a long section to this ugly chain link fence to cover and I started out planting the hyacinth bean vine, just two seeds every foot or so (they all seem to germinate) about 4 years ago. I save seed every year so I had free seeds after that first year.
I also started buying one or two clematis plants (perennial vines) every year and planting them every five feet apart. Every two years, I dug up that clematis and divided it and spread it around too. Now I don't have to plant the hyacynth bean plants anymore because my ugly fence is covered with beautiful clematis every year now.
Seriously, I don't think you'll be happy with the morning glories. Besides, the leaves stink. Good luck whatever you do!
Reply:They will climb. My yard fence is covered with them all summer. They will reseed themselves and become a bit of a problem if you are trying to grow anything else in the area. But they are beautiful in the mornings when they are covered with open flowers. I do love them. My favorite is the Heavenly Blue. They have bigger flowers than the red ones.
Reply:Morning Glories are considered to be a noxious weed in Australia, %26amp; there is good reason for that train of thought. Like many things of that kind it was brought into our country from another, %26amp; is fast taking over our beautiful bushland.I wouldn't grow it unless you have the time %26amp; resources to keep it in check.
Reply:chicken wire is a great idea for morning glories
I would plant quite a few seeds so it almost becomes a screen of leaves and flowers
You could also even try some scarlet runner beans which will give great red flowers, attract hummingbirds and give you some beans in the fall!!
Reply:I would not choose morning glories. After the season is over, you will be left with the dried vines in, around and through the chicken wire.
Reply:Morning Glories will climb on anything! Chicken wire is actually a great idea, it gives them lots of options on where to grow.
Reply:Most species are natural climbers..... they will grow into vine
