This year I was thinking of planting all the above in the front of my house. The area is approx 2 1/2-3 ft deep and 6 ft wide, and it gets full sun. My question is, Ive heard that the 4 o'clocks get pretty large. Would they be too much choking the morning glories and moon flowers off?
Morning glories, moon flowers and 4 o'clocks........?
Hello, I just wanted to let you know that four oclocks are the least of your worries. I have done morning glories, 4 oclocks and moon flower. My daughter had an aunt hill that has four oclocks and there is not a lot of four oclocks taking over the yard. But read this about my moon flower. It took over my flower bed like a huge blanket (gigantic leaves) ground cover. Check it out.

Reply:morning glories are my favorite, as you can get so many seeds from them for the next year
I plant them around our back deck and are so beautiful
Reply:I would be more concerned with the moon flowers. Mine got huge. They took up a good size area.
Reply:Those are all large plants to combine in a small area. If you look at the seed packages in a hardware store, they describe the sizes very well, especially if they have full sun and so will grow to full size.
Keep in mind that there are varieties for each type of plant, and the final expected sizes can vary hugely!!
Maybe pick the morning glories for the background, and a couple small types for the front. Or just one other type.
With too much ambition in a single plot it tends to get messy looking. It looks best with a large coverage of the same thing, I've found. (I tended to try what you are for a number of years before I finally gave into single choices as better looking.)
A couple other ideas of similarly flowering but smaller plants:
- Marigolds love sun, come in varied colors so they can look contrasting without looking messy.
- Nasturiums (spelling?) grow to 1 foot or a little more, with nice flowers, if put in full sun. (They prefer non-rich soil though.)
I'm jealous though. I have a lot of plots but everything is in shade or deep shade so I plant endless begonias and impatients.
Reply:4 o'clock can get very big, but morning glorys climb up, up and up.
Reply:it is possible. i would keep the 4 o clocks in a pot and a seperate area that isnt too far away , but far enougth. morning glories and mooon flowers do very well when together becuase they have 2 shows, one in the morning, and one at night
Reply:I would plant the morning glories and moon flowers about 3 weeks before the 4 o'clocks. My grandmother called 4 o'clocks "pretty tonights''. Be sure to read instructions on moon and morning glories ...soak before planting in warm water...about 24 hours
Reply:I have a lot of 4-o-clocks started, some are in fairly large planters. I wanted to see what the lime green ones are like. there is more than 1 type of plant called a moon flower. some vine like morning Glory's but I has some last year that only get about 3 feet tall. beautiful flower but the entire plant is poison so may not be a good idea if you have small children around
